ACILS 35th Anniversary · 1991 - 2026

The History of ACILS

35 years of hands that unite

In 1991, a small group of interpreters decided that what had been invisible needed a name and recognition.

This is how ACILS was born, with the aim of valuing interpreting as a profession and defending sign language. Since then, every step has been the result of shared efforts, learning and commitment.

The journey so far is also the story of a profession that has grown and become stronger. Through this comic, we want to illustrate, step by step, how this collective journey has been built.

When Interpreting Was Not Yet a Profession

Before a professional structure existed, sign language interpreting mainly took place within families.

People close to Deaf individuals acted as communication bridges without training or recognition. It was essential work, but invisible. It was not considered a profession.

Faced with this reality, a small group of interpreters decided to drive change.

Through this comic, we want to illustrate, step by step, how this collective journey has been built.

«What was invisible needed a name, rigor and professional recognition.»

The Birth of a Collective Idea

ACILS was founded with a clear goal: to defend interpreting as a profession that requires training and ethical standards. The care-based model needed to be overcome, and a solid foundation had to be built.

Courses, meetings and spaces for discussion began to take shape. Step by step, the path was built through a code of ethics development and the introduction of the first formal training program: the higher vocational qualification in sign language interpreting.

Growth and Recognition

The interpreting community began to grow and organize itself. Sign language gained a stronger presence in education and society.

Training took a major step forward with its introduction into university education. The profession became more established, with stronger academic standards and quality.

Catalan Sign Language gained legal recognition, reinforcing its value. ACILS grew stronger as a professional voice and a space for collective representation.

A New Chapter, Standing Alongside Interpreters

The number of trained professionals continued to grow, and ACILS remained actively committed to improving their training and working conditions.

With a new board, the association entered a new chapter, taking on fresh challenges: revitalizing member engagement, addressing job insecurity and strengthening the cohesion of the professional community.

The Power of Collective Effort

Over time, the association also became a place of support and connection. Continuing professional development, the defense of employment rights and shared work strengthened the community. New generations joined, bringing fresh perspectives, and the Signapp application was created.

The profession continued to evolve alongside social and technological changes, while maintaining its commitment to the Deaf Community.
